Culture Through Making is an initiative that offers hope. Centred on craft, identity and education, with a focus on rebuilding lives, it is a transformative educational skills and training programme for Syrians inside Syria and in neighbouring countries. It offers the chance for those who have suffered trauma and violence to turn their energies towards creating objects that are useful, practical and beautiful, a process that is healing and therapeutic, bringing communities together.
Syria’s traditional craft skills are rich in culture and identity, passed down from one generation to another. Textiles, ceramics, wood and glass are natural products, readily available on the ground, and these are the fields in which the Syrian sense of style, colour and design have excelled across the centuries.
Culture Through Making initiative supports the registered UK charity Syria Relief (Reg No 1143797) operating on the ground inside Syria since 2011 offering humanitarian support to the local population affected by the crisis.
